House Republicans Demand Answers Over Mysterious Deaths, Disappearances of High-Level American Scientists

In a decisive move to address growing national security concerns, House Republicans are urgently pressing multiple federal agencies for answers regarding a string of highly unusual incidents. Lawmakers are demanding comprehensive briefings following reports that at least 11 people tied to sensitive U.S. nuclear and aerospace programs have recently died or vanished under mysterious circumstances.“Public reports raise questions about a possible sinister connection between a string of mysterious deaths and disappearances which began in 2023,” two Republican senators, House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer of Kentucky, and Subcommittee Chairman Eric Burlison of Missouri, said in a letter.The letters formally request immediate briefings from the FBI, the Department of Energy, NASA, and the Department of Defense. The lawmakers say that the reports involve highly specialized individuals with direct connections to “U.S. nuclear secrets or rocket technology” who have “died or mysteriously vanished.” The primary objective of the written inquiries is to determine whether these occurrences represent a coordinated threat and to assess whether any broader national security risk currently exists.“If the reports are accurate, these deaths and disappearances may represent a grave threat to U.S. national security and to U.S. personnel with access to scientific secrets. We request a briefing on the information the [Defense] Department has regarding these deaths and disappearances, as well as the processes and procedures in place to protect American scientific secrets and ensure personnel safety,” the senators said in their letter to Defense Secretary Peter Hegseth.The formal requests ask for staff-level briefings from the targeted agencies by April 27. The letters demand any existing information regarding the individuals in question, as well as a detailed outline of the current procedures in place to protect sensitive scientific personnel and classified research. Speaking on the urgency of the letters, Mr. Comer appeared on Fox News on Sunday and admitted that when he first heard about the disappearances, they sounded like “some kind of crazy conspiracy theory.” However, the troubling details of the cases ultimately changed his mind, prompting him to draft the letters and alert multiple government agencies.“We’ve put a notice out to the Department of War, to the FBI, to NASA, to the Department of Energy, that we want to know everything that they know about what happened with these scientists, because those four agencies were predominantly the agencies that those 11 individuals were affiliated with. And we want to try to piece this together,” Mr. Comer said.He further noted that he plans to bring the leaders of these offices before Congress but opted to send the letters first to allow them adequate time to ensure their testimonies would not compromise any potentially classified investigations. The security implications of the lost personnel are immense, as Mr. Comer noted, “We know there are many countries around the world that would love to have our knowledge and nuclear capabilities. And these are the people that were at the forefront of it, and they’re either dead or missing.”The list of missing or deceased figures noted in public reporting and tied to the inquiry includes experimental propulsion researcher Amy Eskridge, 34; retired Air Force Major General William “Neil” McCasland, 68; NASA scientist Monica Jacinto Reza, 60; contractor Steven Garcia, 48; astrophysicist Carl Grillmair, 47; Massachusetts Institute of Technology physicist Nuno Loureiro, 47; NASA engineer Frank Maiwald, 61; Los Alamos–linked employees Melissa Casias, 53, and Anthony Chavez, 79; NASA researcher Michael David Hicks, 59; and pharmaceutical scientist Jason Thomas, 45.Among these cases, McCasland disappeared from his Albuquerque home in February, leaving behind personal items but taking his wallet and a firearm. Reza remains missing after vanishing during a California hike. Authorities have not yet indicated that the incidents are linked, with the cases spanning disappearances, confirmed homicides, and deaths with no identified foul play. Lawmakers referenced reports suggesting a possible professional connection between some of the individuals through past Air Force–funded research programs involving advanced materials, though no confirmed link has been established.The Defense Department has said in a statement that there are “no active national security investigations” involving the personnel tied to the reported cases.The White House has acknowledged the issue, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirming officials are working with agencies to gather information. President Trump has also vowed to investigate, recently telling reporters he had “just left a meeting” on the matter, calling it “pretty serious stuff.”“I hope it’s random, but we’re going to know in the next week and a half,” Mr. Trump told reporters Thursday. Said the senators in their letters, “Like President Trump, the Committee is concerned with this fact pattern and seeks to understand whether U.S. national security or American scientific personnel are at risk, and what each relevant agency is doing to mitigate such risk.”
