Michele Tafoya Trades the Sideline Mic for the Senate Stump

For eleven years Michele Tafoya was one of the most recognizable faces on television, roaming NFL sidelines for NBC’s Sunday Night Football. As of last week, the four-time Sports Emmy winner is a step closer to calling Washington her home field after securing a decisive victory in Minnesota’s Republican U.S. Senate primary.Ms. Tafoya defeated a primary field that included former Navy SEAL Adam Schwarze, who lost despite securing the state party’s endorsement in June, and former NBA player Royce White, the GOP’s 2024 Senate nominee who has recently declared himself transgender for the purpose of entering the 2027 WNBA draft. Her win signals a shift by Minnesota Republican voters who favored name recognition and broad electoral appeal over traditional party purity.“Thank you, Minnesota!” Ms. Tafoya posted to X on August 12 in a message which got nearly 3,000 retweets. “I am honored to be the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate. Tonight’s results show Minnesotans are ready for a new direction. Together, we will bring common sense back to Washington, fight fraud, hold those responsible accountable, and win in November.”Ms. Tafoya, 61, framed her candidacy as a response to years of Democratic-Farmer-Labor leadership in the state, characterizing her campaign as non-traditional. “This isn’t about red versus blue. It’s common sense versus crazy,” she said.Ms. Tafoya’s transition from sports broadcasting to high-stakes politics began after Super Bowl LVI in February 2022, when she stepped away from NBC. She said at the time she wanted to pursue cultural and political issues without encountering corporate friction.“I got to a point in my life where I wanted to try other things, and there are some things that are really important to me,” Ms. Tafoya told the Athletic at the time. “This is not to say that sports isn’t an important field, that my job isn’t an important job. But in my position, I was not as free to be as vocal about world events that I’m concerned about.”“It’s not because I was told to shut up,” she continued. “I want to be very clear about that. But look, if you’re on a show like Sunday Night Football, which is the No. 1 show in prime time for 11 straight years, unprecedented, the last thing they want to do is invite controversy.”Ms. Tafoya began her post-football career hosting a podcast centered on political commentary and appeared frequently on national programs. When she launched her campaign in January, her trained skills in communication resonated with voters, positioning her as one of the state’s most viable Republican candidates in years. Minnesota Republicans have not won a statewide race for any office since 2006 when Tim Pawlenty was re-elected as governor.“Minnesota is going 100 miles an hour in the wrong direction after years of single-party rule,” Ms. Tafoya wrote in her victory post. “They’ve turned our state into a national embarrassment. I love this state. My husband and I fell in love here, raised our family here, and built our lives here. I will not sit by and let the state we call home become a laughing stock.”Ms. Tafoya will face Mr. Walz’s lieutenant governor, Peggy Flanagan, in the general election. The Republican candidate had focused her campaign on ending what she called fraud scandals, billions of “stolen” taxpayer dollars, rising crime, and a failing educational system, all under the watch of the Walz administration.“We will not re-elect politicians who let criminals steal billions and treat accountability as optional,” she said. “We deserve better, and it’s time we demand better.”Playing backup on Wednesday for Ms. Flanagan, who blew away expectations in her 20-point victory Tuesday night over her primary competitors, was her vanquished rival, Congresswoman Angie Craig. “Michelle Tafoya is a threat to our democracy,” said Ms. Craig. “It’s time for Minnesota to come together and keep this seat blue.”Ms. Tafoya has emphasized core Republican priorities such as lowering taxes, reducing government spending, deporting non-citizens convicted of welfare fraud, and opposing transgender athletes playing in women’s sports. But she also describes herself as pro-choice and advocates for legal abortion access up to 12 weeks of pregnancy.“Results show Minnesotans are ready for a new direction,” Ms. Tafoya said. Republicans have not won a U.S. Senate seat in Minnesota since 2002, but Ms. Tafoya believes she will change that come November. “We have raised record amounts of money for a Senate campaign in the state of Minnesota, which tells me that the message is resonating, that people think we can win, that people think we are electable,” said Ms. Tafoya.“So this could mark a real shakeup,” she added. “I’ve never run for office before. I’m not a career politician. I had a career, I loved it. I just couldn’t watch it anymore. We’ve tried it their way, the way of the Democrat establishment, this single-party rule for years…I want to offer a change and that’s what I’m going to do.”
