November Restaurant Openings

In the photo studio at Gourmet magazine, pastry chef Sam Mason recently showed off several dishes from his yet-to-be-named SoHo restaurant. Most fall previews listed it as opening this month, but Mr. Mason explained, “It takes a lot longer to build a restaurant than I thought.” His restaurant is now scheduled to open next year, which leaves plenty of time to come up with a name. Here’s a list of new places, all with names, reservation lines, and opening dates this month. But delays are often on the menu when it comes to new restaurants, so be sure to call ahead.
The Russian Tea Room emerges in its third incarnation with a complete restoration of the elaborate interior. Chef Gary Robbins serves modern continental cuisine with Russian influence seven days a week. It’s dinner only to start, with breakfast, lunch, and tea coming soon. 150 W. 57th St., between Sixth and Seventh avenues, 212-581-7100. Opens this Friday.
Gordon Ramsey, known for his Michelinstarred cooking and his televised bad-boy antics, opens the much-anticipated Gordon Ramsey at the London. The 45-seat restaurant is his first in America. London NYC Hotel, 151 W. 54th St., between Sixth and Seventh avenues, 212-468-8888. Opens November 16.
Max Brenner brings his Wonka-style Chocolates by the Bald Man to the East Village just in time for the holidays. His second New York City shop is smaller than the Union Square flagship, but has the same menu and retail offerings. 141 Second Ave. at 9th Street, 212-388-0030. Opening mid-November.
The quiet corner of Bank Street and Waverly Place is about to become the center of Gotham’s café society universe when the editor of Vanity Fair, Graydon Carter, and partners reopen the the Waverly Inn. The menu will feature comfort food, the walls an Edward Sorel mural, and the dinning room a who’s who of New York Cith. 16 Bank St. at Waverly Place. No phone at press time. Opening later this month.
OUT OF TOWN
For a great New York steak outside the city, Laurent Tourondel opens BLT DC, the first out-oftown expansion of his BLT empire, which includes Steak, Prime, Fish and now burgers. 1625 I Street NW, Washington DC, 202-689-8999. Opening after November 9.
For Peking duck south of the border, Philippe Chow brings his chic chinois to Mexico City. Much larger than Philippe in Midtown, the two-story Mexican version will seat 350 with an outdoor lounge with two waterfalls. Av.
