The holiday party season is followed by the season of remorse. Now we eat, drink, and make merry. After January 1, we diet and work out. Each year, gym attendance soars after New Year’s Day. But which gym is right for you? At first, New York’s offerings seem limitless and the choices difficult. But the market is actually pretty well segmented to let you choose how much you want to pay for what level of service. Plus, at this time of year, several gyms are offering inducements to sign up.
All the gyms listed below offer a wide range of classes and provide quality machines at attractive (or reasonably attractive) facilities — and all offer end-of-year promotions to sweeten the deal.
THE SPORTS CLUB/LA AT ROCKEFELLER CENTER
The Basics: The Sports Club/ LA (45 Rockefeller Plaza, 212-218-8600, thesportsclubla.com) is billed by its spokesman as “the world’s most luxurious health and fitness club.” With this gold standard in mind, it does offer a sprawling 12,000-square-foot gym, plush locker rooms, nice amenities, wide-ranging classes, and more celebrities than you might care to encounter during your basic workout session.
The Cost: Initiation, $650; monthly charges, $165, for Rockefeller Center Club only. Bicoastal membership, initiation, $1,200; monthly charges, $220, includes entrance to clubs in Los Angeles and New York, where there is also an Upper East Side location. Executive membership, $1,500; monthly charges, $300, covers all 10 Sports Club/LA locations in the country — there are clubs in Boston, Miami, Washington, and elsewhere — and includes laundry service, a private locker, and a daily continental breakfast.
Holiday Promotion: Preferred rates for personal training allow you to buy 24 sessions, for the price of 12 sessions. And just for New York Sun readers: The Sports Club/LA will give you a day pass (worth $35), if you bring in a copy of the newspaper.
THE MAY CENTER FOR HEALTH, FITNESS & SPORT AT THE 92ND STREET Y
The Basics: The May Center (1395 Lexington Ave. at 92nd Street, 212-415-5500, 92y.org), which calls itself “a true community center serving a culturally diverse population of all ages,” has a 75-foot ozone-disinfected swimming pool, a 5,000-square-foot cardiovascular fitness space, and more than 100 classes weekly, as well as courts for basketball and racquetball. Television monitors in the gym can be tuned in to the 92nd Street Y’s renowned cultural programs, providing exercisers a little culture with their sweat.
The Cost: Initiation, $254; monthly charges, $83 with a 12-month minimum.
Holiday Promotion: During the month of December, take $200 off the initiation fee. Next month, there will be an open house that includes sample classes, a free fitness assessment, and additional special offers.
CRUNCH
The Basics: Crunch (14 locations in Manhattan, 888-310-6011, crunch.com), which prides itself on its extraordinary range of classes, is at the forefront of new fitness trends, offering what it calls “one-of-a-kind” classes. In addition to basic body sculpt, yoga, and Pilates, it offers “winter boarding” to get in shape for the slopes, varsity hoops drills for basketball, and Camp Crunch based on U.S. Army fitness training.
The Cost: Monthly charges, $84–$99, with a 12-month commitment.
Holiday Promotion: Under its Detox Special, you get one month free if you join in January and come to the gym for 7 days before Jan. 31. The idea is to create healthy habits in January after spending a few weeks indulging in rich holiday foods, and stressing out over holiday plans in December.
NEW YORK HEALTH & RACQUET CLUB
The Basics: In business for 30 years, this club won the term “venerable.” With its slogan, “Life is a gift,” New York Health & Racquet Club (nine locations in Manhattan, 800-472-2378, nyhrc.com) urges guests to forget the stresses of everyday life and focus instead on fitness and peace of mind. It offers more than 600 weekly classes, 12 kinds of yoga, and 13 kinds of massages.
The Cost: A two-year membership, initiation, $1,739; monthly charges, $72. Other rate plans, including discounts for students and seniors, are available.
Holiday Promotion: End-of-the-year blowout allows you to beat the January price increase.
ASPHALT GREEN
The Basics: Asphalt Green’s slogan of “sports and fitness for a lifetime” neatly encapsulates its family and community orientation. Founded in 1983, Asphalt Green (555 E. 90th St., between York and East End avenues, 212-369-8890, asphaltgreen.org) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to helping people of all ages and backgrounds become healthier through sports and fitness. Its most famous asset is its gorgeous Olympic-size swimming pool, saved from demolition by community activists in the early 1980s.
The Cost: Call for details.
Holiday Promotion: Twelve days of fitness passes allow full access to facilities at no charge. If you sign up in January, the enrollment fee will be waived.
