Anti-Capitalist ‘Animal Farm’ Taints Angel Studios and Exposes Conservative Endorsers Like Tucker Carlson

Angel Studios is calling it a “100 percent wrong opinion” to dislike their new revisionist film “Animal Farm” with capitalists as the villains. In doing so, the distributor risks sacrificing its promise to make and distribute “values-based” entertainment, dimming prospects for upcoming films like “Young Washington,” and exposing the conservatives it’s paying to endorse a salute to communism.In the 1945 novella, George Orwell satirized the USSR’s dictators, Vladimir Lenin as Old Major and Joseph Stalin as Napoleon. But the film’s director, Andy Serkis, judges it “wrongthink” to use jargon from Orwell’s “1984.” A Bolshevik-style uprising is now a happy ending rather than the beginning of a reign of terror.Mr. Serkis presumed that a “timeless classic” needed a rewrite for modern audiences. A former member of the U.K.’s Socialist Workers Party, he told USA Today that it’s okay if people “don’t agree with me,” so long as they “think differently,” meaning align their opinions with his — in other words Orwellian “doublethink.”The $30 million animated “Animal Farm” flopped at the box office, grossing just $3.3 million from 2,600 theaters in its opening weekend, with surveys showing just 28% of audience would recommend the picture. Rather than make amends, Angel is punching back, and releasing a video likening critics to the pigs, a tactic straight out of the allegory itself. Animals are browbeaten with a slogan, “Napoleon is always right.” At first, the pigs might’ve declared that “whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy,” but once they’ve silenced opposition, they begin walking upright.In the film Angel distributed, the Stalinist Napoleon is a pink, porcine protagonist exploited by a billionaire in what resembles a Tesla Cybertruck. Commentator, Timothy Pool — who Angel agreed to debate before backing out, having previously unsuccessfully asked him to endorse the film— noted that the new villain resembles the mother, Maye Musk, of Tesla’s owner, Elon.This bait-and-switch irritated many of those who bought tickets to “Animal Farm” based on recommendations from commentators they trusted. The podcaster, Tucker Carlson, called the adaptation “a movie to watch with your kids,” which explored “human nature,” “the desire for authority,” and “totalitarian power.”Mr. Carlson asserted that the film would irritate the “woke,” which fans inferred meant a faithful adaptation. But his choice of words made the horrors Orwell depicted universal, not singular evils of Marxism. Mr. Serkis likewise swapped “communism” for the ephemeral “authoritarianism” and reduced Orwell’s message to the generic “power corrupting.”The titular host of “The Riley Gaines Show” on Fox News tweeted that she got “an early access screening to ‘Animal Farm.’” Leaving it unclear if she took the opportunity to watch, she said that the filmmakers “do a perfect job reminding viewers that Marxism always has and always will fail.” A Community Note countered the assertion.The self-styled “Red Headed Libertarian,” Josie Glabach, tweeted that she saw no “red flags” about “Animal Farm.” But now, judging it “Orwelled Orwell,” she “cannot … promote” it but wouldn’t say not to see it, either. She deleted a post calling the film “geared towards homeschoolers.” Wall Street Maverick also killed a post describing it as “the type of movie woke Hollywood would never make.”It might’ve given endorsers pause that prominent left-wing actors, Seth Rogen and Woodrow “Woody” Harrelson, voice Napoleon and Boxer respectively. But Angel’s name carried weight after distributing Christian-pleasing films like “The Sound of Freedom,” a smash hit depiction of human trafficking panned by liberal outlets like NPR.“That’s the sound of freedom,” Napoleon says at one point as he passes gas. A U.K. YouTuber, Disparu, discussed missing such obvious digs and changes to the source material. “I don’t think it’s too much to ask that,” he said, “if you’re going to do a paid sponsorship for a movie, you should watch the movie first.”After the credits roll for “Animal Farm,” QR codes appear on screen to offer feedback. An affirmative response is praised. But answer in the negative and you’re kicked to a different website. “Your opinion is wrong,” it informs you before offering the option to “correct your opinion” by purchasing tickets for others.It’s become routine for studios to ridicule fans as “toxic” for rejecting films and to purchase favorable reviews. Angel promised different, better values. But with their handling of the “Animal Farm” backlash, they’re proving that — like Napoleon when he rose to walk on two legs — they’re letting down everyone who believed in their revolution.
