The Boston Red Sox acquired reliever Mike Stanton from the Washington Nationals yesterday, adding another lefthander to the bullpen in their final push for the playoffs.
The Red Sox sent minor league righthanders Rhys Taylor and Yader Peralta to the Nationals to bring Stanton back for a second stint in Boston. The 38-year-old specialist will be available to pitch this weekend against the Yankees, who cut him on June 30.
Stanton pitched for Boston from 1995-96 during a well-traveled, 17-year career with six teams. He began this season with the Yankees but was designated for assignment after going 1-2 with a 7.08 ERA in 14 innings spanning 28 relief appearances.
He has a 2.08 ERA against left-handed batters this year.
“If he comes in and gets one hitter out, that might be enough,” Boston manager Terry Francona said. “This guy’s not going to come in and pitch the ninth for us.”
Stanton signed with Washington on July 13 and went 2-1 with a 3.58 ERA in 27 2/3 innings over 30 games.
“They’ve got a couple of ours. Now we’ve got a couple of theirs,” Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek said.
