‘Sarkozy Reaches Out to America, and to Its Jews’
It’s refreshing to see a French leader reaching out to the American people, and President Sarkozy’s high-profile effort merits our appreciation [National, “Sarkozy Reaches Out to America, and to Its Jews,” November 8, 2007].
I’m afraid, though, that like the pronouncements of other self-professed friends of Israel, well-meaning as they may be, Mr. Sarkozy’s statements leave me with a feeling of alarm.
After all, who can fail to have noticed that Israel has been taking risks for peace for at least the last 14 years. What Israel has gained for that effort, which includes the creation of an internal refugee problem consisting of formerly proud Gazan Jews, most of whom are still without jobs or permanent housing, is thousands of maimed or dead Israelis.
Israelis are a population under siege from daily rocket attacks in Sederot and its environs, and an increasing existential threat on its borders.
Certainly Israel’s existence must be “inviolable,” and “the international community has a responsibility for Israel’s security.” But who’s going to make the international community live up to its responsibility?
