‘City Is Pushing Colleges To Expand Into Poorer Areas’

The recent article titled “City Is Pushing Colleges To Expand Into Poorer Areas” completely misrepresents Downtown Brooklyn as a “far flung” place for institutions of higher learning [New York, October4, 2007].

Much to the contrary, for over a century, Downtown Brooklyn has been home to seven colleges and universities that are on the forefront of several areas of academic focus.

With more than 38,000 students attending school in the Downtown Brooklyn area every day, this area rivals some of the most well-known college towns in America.

The recent merger talks between New York University and Polytechnic University and NYU’s purchase of a building on Joralemon Street for student housing further reinforce Downtown Brooklyn’s status as a vibrant center for learning and living.

Equally disturbing is the fact that Ms. Karni puts Downtown Brooklyn into a category of “distant neighborhoods.” Certainly one of Downtown Brooklyn’s greatest assets is its transportation network. Just minutes from Lower Manhattan, Downtown Brooklyn is served by a 14 subway, 15 buslines and the Long Island Railroad.

I hope in the future that you provide readers with a more informed description of what Downtown Brooklyn has to offer local and international students.

President
