‘Mets Mark Worst Fall In History’

I dispute the consensus opinion that the Mets’ admittedly horrendous and shocking late-season collapse is the worst in baseball history [Sports, “Mets Mark Worst Fall In History,” October1,2007].

True, the Mets blew a seven game lead with 17 games left, but just three years ago, in the 2004 ALCS, the great Yankees team had a 3 game “lead” over the Red Sox with only four games to go.

Yet the Yankees proceeded to choke up big-time, getting “swept” the rest of that series, ending their season and allowing the Red Sox to take the Yankees’ place in that World Series.

Mathematically, just multiply both numbers by four, that’s equivalent to losing a 12 game lead with 16 games to go. If you think about it, that’s even more embarrassing and ignominious.
