ROCKAWAYS OPENS PARK DEDICATED TO 9/11

A park dedicated to the victims of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, opened yesterday in the Rockaways, a neighborhood that lost 75 residents in the tragedy. Mayor Bloomberg was on hand to dedicate Tribute Park, which highlights the toll on city firefighters with a “Fireman’s Walk” and a granite rock engraved with the names of the 343 fire personnel who died on September 11. The mayor noted that the Rockaways had more victims than any other neighborhood in the city. The park, which cost $630,000, also features a mosaic centerpiece pointed toward Lower Manhattan. The park is located at Beach 116th Street and Beach Channel Drive; it is down the street from the spot slated for a memorial to Flight 587, the passenger jet that crashed in Belle Harbor in November 2001, killing all 265 passengers aboard.

After searching for his daughter all day, Usher Banks called 911 and reported Ishauana missing at 6:30 p.m., the authorities said.

DEADLY STABBING AT BIRTHDAY PARTY

An angry partygoer stabbed a bartender to death and injured a patron as a Brooklyn birthday party was winding down, according to the police. At about 4:18 a.m. yesterday, the lights went on and alcohol was no longer being served at Club Attraction, at 566 Nostrand Ave., close to Atlantic Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant. One reveler, Albert Springer, 35, got into an argument with the bartender, Edwardo Carter, 55, when Carter refused to serve Mr. Springer an alcoholic beverage, police said. Carter finally conceded and gave the man a drink. But Mr. Springer was still enraged, police said, and he jumped over the bar and stabbed Carter once in the chest. As Mr. Springer fled the party, he encountered a party attendee, Ray Vassel, 30, and slashed him with his knife; it was not immediately clear why. Carter was taken to Interfaith Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 5:04 a.m., police said. Mr. Vassel was taken to Kings County Hospital, in stable condition. Mr. Springer was brought to Bellevue Hospital, where he was treated for a laceration to the back, police said. The charges against Mr. Springer were pending early last night.
