A Queens woman who defrauded elderly men out of hundreds of thousands of dollars was sentenced to six months in jail and five years of probation after she pleaded guilty to charges of grand larceny, prosecutors said yesterday.
A spokesman for the district attorney’s office said Nancy Jace, 38, of Flushing, went under aliases such as Tina Rosa, Tina Lee, Sunshine Jace, and Tina Ross, as she bilked elderly and lonely men out of large sums of money by telling them she needed the cash for medical bills for herself or her sister, or for start-up costs for new businesses.
Prosecutors said Jace also plied her victims with promises of intimacy to get them to give her money. They said one of Jace’s cons involved a frail 87-year-old man whom Jace visited almost daily. She told him that her sister was suffering from colon cancer and that she needed money for medical bills, a computerized sewing machine, and other materials for a fictional tailoring business. The victim gave Jace several checks, totaling $214,000.
In addition to Jace’s jail time and probation, she must also pay restitution to her victims. She was ordered to pay $30,000 immediately and an additional $20,000 in monthly installments over the next two years.
Jace also must forfeit $40,000 in cash, plus a large amount of expensive jewelry including watches, rings, and necklaces, and three cars, a Mercedes Benz, a Jaguar, and a Jeep Grand Cherokee that investigators seized during the investigation, a spokesman for the DA’s office said.
SILVER STORE ROBBED
A store specializing in silver jewelry and goods was robbed early yesterday morning, with the unknown suspect or suspects making off with over $100,000 in goods, police said.
Police said the suspect broke the front window of the Silver Fund at 1001 Madison Ave. and then cut through a metal drop-down gate to gain entrance. No arrests have been made, and the investigation is ongoing, police said.
QUEENS KIDNAPPER ATTEMPTS ESCAPE
A Queens man who allegedly kidnapped his wife after shooting a hospital clerk tried to escape yesterday by jumping out of a police car, police said. Miguel Carrasquillo, 33, was quickly re-apprehended by officers and taken to a local hospital, police said.
Police said Mr. Carrasquillo was arrested in a bus station in North Carolina on Monday, after kidnapping his wife from Elmhurst Hospital and shooting one of her co-workers in the face with a .32-caliber revolver.
Nancy Carrasquillo, 42, was with her husband in Fayetteville when he was apprehended. She had accused him of harassing and abusing her and had taken out an order of protection the day before the kidnapping.
MOTHER KILLED
A Long Island mother was found stabbed to death in her bedroom after her 6-year-old daughter, covered in blood, wandered outside to play and told a neighbor, “My mother’s not moving.”
Diane Malone, 32, was found by the neighbor, Rawa Lazar, Monday night, police said. Malone’s three children, ages 1, 2, and 6, were unharmed.
Malone had been stabbed and bludgeoned to death, Nassau County Detective Lieutenant Dennis Farrell said.
Ms. Lazar told WCBS News Radio the girl came out of the house crying and “drenched in blood.”
When Ms. Lazar asked where her mother was, the girl replied, “My mother’s not moving.”
Ms. Lazar went into the house and found the body.
Investigators were looking for Malone’s estranged husband, 35-year-old David Malone, Lieutenant Farrell said.
