New York City is home to plenty of boutiques devoted exclusively to selling chocolate. But anyone looking to purchase a cocoa-infused holiday gift need not look further than chocata.com— a new site that specializes in culling the best from artisanal chocolatiers, and selling those sweet treats online.
The site’s proprietor, Stephane Barbier, was born in Lyon, France, and was raised to appreciate the finest foods. He says the chocolates he chooses for Chocata — brands on offer include sweets from Vosges Haut-Chocolat, MarieBelle, Knipschildt, and Vere — are all memorable chocolate creations.
For example, there’s the $23, 12-piece Theo Chocolate Collection Box, featuring burnt sugar, fig-fennel, and ginger varieties; and the $34 box of cognac Vere Truffles, made up of 16 pieces in flavors such as cognac, cream, coffee, and Earl Grey Tea. For customers with special dietary restrictions, Chocata offers dairy-free, gluten-free, kosher, and vegan chocolates. Mr. Barbier also sells sustainable and fairtrade products. He said Chocata caters to customers who value quality over quantity, and who are willing to spend more for high-end chocolates. In the next several months, Mr. Barbier said, he plans to host chocolate-tasting parties in various chocolate shops throughout the city. “I do believe chocolate is the next wine connoisseur thing,” he said. “People don’t know much about it and, as much as wine has made inroads — people know about it, and they go to tastings — I think chocolate has reached levels where people will come.”
