Chanukah Specialties

In celebration of Chanukah, which began yesterday at sundown, many city restaurants and markets are cooking up festival favorites. During the holiday, it is tradition to eat foods fried in oil — commemorating an ancient miracle in which a day’s worth of oil lasted for eight days.
A Lower East Side deli, Noah’s Ark (399 Grand St., between Clinton and Suffolk streets, 212-674-2200) is offering “colossal and golden brown” plate-size latkes in sweet potato or corn scallion varieties. (An order of two potato pancakes is $3.95.) Meanwhile, My Most Favorite Food (120 W. 45th St., between Broadway and Sixth Avenue, 212-997-5130), a kosher dairy restaurant in Midtown, has holiday fare including housemade applesauce ($8 for 16 ounces), and made-to-order sufganiyot, or jelly doughnuts, in two sizes ($2 each for regular size, $12 for a dozen mini doughnuts).
At Whole Foods Market (4 Union Square South, 212-673-5388, and other locations) the kosher “Adventures in Hanukkah” specialties include roasted brisket ($14.99 a pound), potato latkes and carrot-parsnip pancakes (both, $6.99 a pound.). For dessert, there are double chocolate ganache cakes ($18.99 for a 6-inch cake, and $26.99 for a 9-inch cake). Orders must be placed 48 hours in advance. And the kosher-style Chanukah menu at Fairway Market (2127 Broadway at 74th Street, 866-392-2897, and other locations) has on it a smoked salmon platter ($85/serves 10), an assorted Mediterranean dip platter ($70/serves 10), sweetened and unsweetened applesauce ($3.99/pint), and a chocolate fudge “Hannukah log” ($10.99/serves 8).
