LENNON IN NEW YORK Bob Gruen discusses his book “John Lennon: The New York Years” (Stewart, Tabori & Chang), a compendium of photographs taken during the last decade of Lennon’s life. AFTER THE HURRICANE New York University hosts a symposium and fundraiser, “Before and After Katrina: History, Race and Space in New Orleans.” Two American studies professors at NYU, Adam Green and Walter Johnson, join a professor of African-American studies at U.C. WHITMAN WALK The curator of the exhibit “Walt Whitman and the Promise of America, 1855-2005,” Karen Karbiener, conducts a tour of the exhibit and reads selections from the edition of “Leaves of Grass” that she recently edited. KOCH’S NEW YORK The exhibit “New York Comes Back: Mayor Ed Koch and the City” opens with a symposium on Mayor Koch’s role in restoring the city to fiscal stability. Ken Auletta, Stephen Berger, Victor Gotbaum, Joyce Purnick, and the Reverand Al Sharpton participate in a roundtable discussion and author Pete Hamill is the keynote speaker. A reception and viewing of the exhibit follows.
