President Biden’s approval rating is nearing the 50-50 mark, at least according to one Republican-leaning pollster.

Rasmussen Reports and Pulse Opinion Research released a poll Tuesday showing President Biden at 47 percent approval and 52 percent disapproval. The pollster’s previous weekly survey found Mr. Biden at 43 percent approval and 55 percent disapproval.

The poll is part of a streak of wins for the president that includes passage of the Inflation Reduction Act. Last week, the Sun reported that Mr. Biden’s administration was using the wave of good news to attempt to rebrand the president as an understated but effective political operator.

While it’s not clear whether the president’s rebranding efforts are responsible for the improvement in his numbers, the data suggest that something is working in the president’s favor among voters.

Looking at the polling averages, Mr. Biden remains unpopular by a margin of around 14 points, but is gradually improving.

At the nadir of his popularity on July 21, 36.8 percent of Americans said they approved of the president. Now, that number is 41.6 percent and rising. Mr. Biden has gained about one point in approval since last week.

Part of the significance of Rasmussen Reports’ polling is that it is now the only firm tracking daily presidential approval rating and that it is one of President Trump’s favorite pollsters.

Mr. Trump once praised the pollster as “one of the most accurate in 2016,” which was largely true at the time. Since then, Rasmussen has had a mixed record.

The group missed the 2018 midterm margin by nearly 10 points —  drastically overestimating Republican support. In 2020, it predicted a one-point popular vote margin in favor of President Biden. The final result was a more than four-point margin.

An associate editor at Sabato’s Crystal Ball, Miles Coleman, tells the Sun that though Rasmussen Reports is a Republican-leaning pollster, this poll still “seems like something of an outlier.”
