A gallery for modern and contemporary furniture, Sebastian + Barquet, was the buyer of the Artek Pavilion, a structure sold at the June 14 Sotheby’s Important 20th Century Design sale, the auction house announced Wednesday. Sebastian + Barquet plans to use the pavilion to showcase exhibitions by some of its major designers, the gallery says.
The pavilion was designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban and is made of a wood-plastic composite, a new material that comes from scrap plastic and paper. The sale was disappointing, generating $602,500 for the auction house, which had predicted that the structure would sell for between $800,000 and $1.2 million.
