Children who lost a parent on September 11 are 10 times as likely to suffer post-traumatic stress disorder as other children, according to a study released yesterday that found a majority have had psychological problems for years after the attacks.
The number of psychiatric problems suffered by the children more than doubled after they lost a parent in the 2001 terrorist attacks, according to the study by researchers at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center.
Several previous studies have documented the psychological effects of living through September 11, 2001, including in children, but not the effects on children who lost parents that day.
