ALBANY — Governor Spitzer announced yesterday he will propose expanding the state's DNA database by requiring samples from every person convicted of a crime in New York.
Mr. Spitzer had promised to expand the DNA database last year during his successful run for governor. The governor said yesterday his legislation also would streamline DNA collection and increase the ability of defendants to use the genetic evidence to prove their innocence.
"This legislation will help us bring the guilty to justice, and exonerate those who have been wrongly accused," Mr. Spitzer said in a prepared release.
Police increasingly use the DNA database as an investigative tool.
New York currently requires DNA samples from roughly half of convicted criminal defendants.
