Community Board Nixes Chelsea Seminary Tower

A Chelsea seminary seeking to raise cash took a blow when a community board issued a resolution recommending against its proposal to build at 15-story condominium tower in its campus.

The plan by General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church to put the tower in a historic district will next go to the Landmark Preservation Council.

The vote by Manhattan's Community Board 4 on Wednesday night comes a year and half into the debate over the seminary's plan. Opponents have claimed the tower would detract from district's character, while the seminary says it needs to raise funds for maintenance of other historic structures on its campus.
