France's Alain Le Roy has been chosen by Secretary-General Ban to head U.N. peacekeeping operations, including 110,000 soldiers, police, and civilian staff on 20 missions, U.N. and French officials said.
Mr. Le Roy, 55, will succeed France's Jean-Marie Guehenno, according to the officials, who spoke on condition they weren't identified. Mr. Guehenno, who announced his resignation in March, oversaw the largest expansion of U.N. peacekeeping in the history of the world body, from 16 missions and 38,000 troops in 2000.
