The Problem With Conservatories

Submitted by Kevin Fagen, Jan 26, 2007 03:24

This article is full of harmful generalizations, cliches, and false assumptions. They are harmful because so many music listeners lack formal education in music, and are likely to parrot expressions from, because they lack the concepts, vocabulary and organized ear of a trained musician. I am most curious about the author's own musical background. On the contrary, a recent and unknown graduate of any of these schools might give a performance that is full of energy, insight, and more technically accurate that that of one of today's smug, jaded, and possibly burnt out multimillion dollar soloists.
