New York Silences Southern Belle

All I can say is it could have been even worse. I went to, and actually graduated from, Cornell University in Ithaca NY. Ithaca is a beautiful place and there were a lot of smart people there. But the idea of intellectual diversity was an outrageous joke. I graduated in 1981. When I told people I was going to vote for Ronald Reagan this was met with absolute outrage, even by my freinds. It was the unspoken assumption that I must be stupid. Never mind that I went on to get a graduate degree. I grew up in California when Reagan was governor. I knew he was a decent and thoughtful man. Folks at Cornell didn't want to hear about it, indeed were outraged I could even say, never mind believe, it. I learned a lot of things at Cornell, among them is the fact that many people, no matter how intelligent, refuse to think for themselves and simply follow the crowd. It' s, sadly, part of the human condition. I wish you the best of luck.
