New York Silences Southern Belle

Submitted by Richard Roessler, Jan 24, 2007 12:21

As a native and current Texan, I worked many of my 30 post graduate years for New York city based firms. In those years I have witnessed much of what you describe, and seen many of these students move into jobs within the city. Sadly, the feel for life is leaving that wonderful place called New York. In my last position with an upper West Side firm, I often thought I was talking to people from another planet. Ideas, comments, anything originating from my old Southern, White Male mind was interpreted as racist, homophobic, or downright idiotic. What a far cry from the hard working, intellegent group I spent so many years with on Wall Street and Park Ave.

As the city loses businesses, and related tax base, maybe consideration s/b given to why. Telling folks they are part of some hate group will not win friends. A city which (contrary to what many believe down heah) was always so friendly has become rude. And the crowning blow, a city which was struck in the worst terrorist attack, has done nothing but ask for more from those who spent so much and gave so much to help. I should qualify that - the older folks are not as much a part of that crowd, but the young folks I met on the Upper West Side most definitely are.

Good Luck in all you do. May you and your rascally husband find happiness in whatever you do and wherever you go.
