Long Love Affairs With Libertarianism

Submitted by Joseph Kellard, Jan 24, 2007 05:53

Dear Sun,

Mr. Shermer's review of free market advocates' disagreement amongst each other was very broad, vague and lacking in any real understanding of absolutes and fundamentals.

Ayn Rand, for example, dismissed the entire libertarian movement based on fundamental ideas -- not "bullet points." Her philosophy of Objectivism was based on certain absolute, fundamental virtues and values, and she defined and demonstrated these thoroughly in her many writings, both through fictional characters and philosophical theory applied to real world examples. In so doing, she demonstrated thoroughly why any deviation from these fundamental ideas would, ultimately, lead to the collapse of freedom.

In the end, Shermer comes off as a modern subjectivist-pragmatist utterly incapable of understanding and distinguishing between these vitally important distinctions, which is the case with most or all libertarians. And that is why Miss Rand disassociated completely her name and philosophy with libertarianism.
