The President's Chance

you seem to confuse an important issue. Whether you do so intentionally, as a rhetorical tool to slip one past your readers, or because in your own head such distinctions are unimportant, i do not know.

The request for a sufficient invading force at the launch of a war in order to better control territory and resources for the purpose of dismantling the potential for an effective insurgency is SIGNIFICANTLY different from waiting for four years as an insurgency entrenches itself firmly in the occupied war zone and only then requesting a build up of our occupying force.

Furthermore, your kudos to our commander-in-chief for firing Rumsfeld make it seem as though he did so as punishment for Rummy's poor performance, and not as an attempt to cur some political favor from the moderates who had formerly supported our war efforts.

And the generals who were recently removed from the war campaign were removed because they argued against the increase to the occupying force. Again, simply a political effort to remove voices of dissent from Bush's seemingly inevitable decision to continue this war for the duration of his time in office.

In addition to a response on my assertions here, i would be curious to hear your definition of a victory in Iraq. Will it include such vague statements as "continuing the war there so we won't have to face THEM here" and "making the world safer for democracy" - two agendas severely endangered by our prolonged agitation of a volatile and culturally embittered region? Or is there actually some clear objective, obtainable in the foreseeable future, that would justify our safe and victorious complete withdrawal from the once and future sovereign nation of Iraq?
