Most Overrated Stat: the Triple Double

Submitted by J. Meade, Jan 23, 2007 02:46

From the time I read "it isn't the team that outrebounded the other that wins", I knew I was in for an idiotic article. I won't rehash the correct comments made by the others to disprove this nonsense, but I will add what was missed.

1) "it isn't the team that outrebounded the other that wins": anyone with an internet connection that pulls up boxscores can see that this is absolute nonsense. Yes, you could make a completely pointless, pedantic, technical argument that the final score is what awards wins and losses, but rebounding is as important as any statistic in generating wins. Any transient fan knows this, much less a so-called writer.

Let's just take tonight, January 22nd, 2006: nine games on the NBA schedule.
Of the nine victors, EIGHT outrebounded the other team. The other game was 35-32 boards in a close loss.

But yea, I guess rebounding doesn't impact an NBA game any. Lord smh.

1a) Speaking of which, assists:
Of the nine victors, SEVEN had more assists than the team they beat.

But no, assists aren't important either.

2) How convenient of you to neglect to mention than the Nets just happened to WIN the December 18th game vs. Golden State, with Kidd's 12 assists going a long way towards getting easy baskets for Nened Krstic on his way to 26 points on 10-15 shooting.

Let's say that again: Nened Krstic, 26 points, 10-15 from the floor. Guess it's just a wild coincidence Kidd had a triple-double.

Nah, what does that matter anyway; anyone who shoots well does so all by himself, he has absolutely no help from his teammates getting him the ball or putting him in a position to succeed, right?

3) In Kidd's 8 triple-double games this season, the Nets are 6-2. This is a team who's overall record is 20-21. So let's see, a 75% win clip when he goes 3x2, 42% otherwise. Hmmm. I guess that's not indicative of anything......The two losses, by the way, was tonight's 1 point loss, and the other a double-OT loss.

4) Five players in the entire 60 plus years of NBA history have recorded over 50 triple doubles.....FIVE. Every one of those players have been to the NBA finals; every one of them is or will be a hall-of-famer. But somehow the triple-double is overrated. Robertson...Magic...Wilt...Bird...Kidd. Just a bunch of overrated players I guess.

My god.

I can't waste any more brain energy dissecting this. Ridiculous.
