Reader comment on:
State of the Schools

Messrs. Bloomberg and Klein are up against a brick wall--the powerful teachers' union. I cannot forsee management of schools by New York City teachers (members of said union) to accomplish much if anything to improve the curricula...

There is a monthly magazine--free to readers--called "Brooklyn Family", which is available at banks and other public places. It is well written and helpful to parents. The January 2007 issue has numerous advertisements for private, charter and parochial schools in the area...To this reader, that means that parents are seeking a way out of the elementary and secondary public school system...

We need vouchers for all children, so that any parent can use same for the school of his or her choice. Charter schools are undemocratic, because they use a lottery system...This has to deny most children their ability to obtain a better education.

The public schools--from personal knowledge--use abysmal teaching methods, do not correct the students' spelling and grammar, and even the books and reading material on the formatted "tests", contain improper English...(I found several errors on a one-page essay third graders were given in preparation for the recent City-wide tests.)

ONCE AGAIN; WE NEED VOUCHERS AVAILABLE TO ALL. IF CERTAIN SCHOOLS CLOSE DUE TO LACK OF SUFFICIENT ATTENDANCE, SO BE IT.

Nancy Joyce Jancourtz.
