The Greatest Player Who Isn't in the Hall of Fame

Submitted by Anthony Salerno, Jan 11, 2007 14:48

Thank you for writing this piece. A great article that I enjoyed immensely. It's a long time coming that a player as great as Dick Allen is finally being recognized as Hall of Fame worth. Although I grew up a Mets fan, Dick Allen was always one of my favorite players. I can remember going to Shea Stadium as a 13 year old and watching Mr. Allen during batting practice. I was awestruck as I watched this man hit laser beams consistently over the left field wall. At that impressionable age, it was one of the greatest power displays that I've ever seen. And he did it swinging a 40 ounce bat, I believe!!!

When I grew up, we didn't have all the different statistical acronyms to judge how great a ball player was ( I confess, I still don't know what a VORP is...) We had BA, HR and RBI to evaluate a players skills. That dude was awesome. He was a great player who definitely deserves election to the Hall of Fame. I hope that someday the Hall of Fame members that make up the Veterans committee correct anoversight by the BBWAA.
