Eduard Shevardnadze was hardly a "Russian ally." He was more accommodating of Russia than Saakashvili is, but he began the bid for NATO, welcomed US military assistance, and closed the deal for the BTC pipeline, all of which drive the Russians mad. And his positions on Abkhazia and South Ossetia weren't much different from Saakashvili's.
