Most Overrated Stat: the Triple Double

Submitted by Lindsay, Jan 6, 2007 15:27

This article actually points out reasons why triple doubles are impressive and not overrated. Yes I agree that why just 10? why is the number set at 10? Probably because 10 is a high number to get in rebounds and assists. Not points but getting 10 in the other two has always been impressive. Like the article says its hard to average 10 rpg.

Also according to the article its hard to get 10 apg, especially because of the way they score an assist. But doesn't this arguement make the triple double more impressive. If it is so hard to get 10 apg because assists aren't scored for players who make the pass that leads to the pass that leads to the assist, it make is harder to get them. Harder to get to 10. So a player that can get to 10 assists and 10 rebounds in a game is impressive. Also impressive because most players are just looking to get theirs, points I mean. All players now look for is points, "DID I score enough".

I get that why should a 12, 10 and 10 game mean more than a 27, 9 and 8 game. well it depends. Did the 27, 9, and 8 guy's team win? Did the 12, 10 and 10 guy's team win? That is all that should really matter. But record books keep double doubles also. Is a 10 and 10 game better than a 30 and 9 game? No. But you have to set a mark for a record. There has to be a limit somewhere or every thing would be a record. So they set it at 10. A nice round number.

An other point was made about the points. If a player gets to 10 but shoots badly who cares, especially if his team lost. But if a player is struggling from the field but get 10 assists and 10 rebounds he helped his team. Every player has bad shooting nights, some more than others. But if the best scorer in the league is held to 10 points on 4 for 20 but he also get 10 assists and 10 rebounds and his team wins, well that should count for something. Don't you think?

I think this article is actually stating why triple doubles are impressive. Its hard to shoot well every night, and its hard to get 10 rebounds and its hard to get 10 assists. But the players who get it done in one game deserve to get credit somewhere.

Next time the article should read why a double double is overrated before a triple double.
