Reconsiderations: Betty Friedan's 'The Feminine Mystique'

Submitted by mike malski, Sep 20, 2008 14:29

As a male, my biggest problem with Friedan is her singular focus on the female mystique. Men have been just as manipulated to play the role of breadwinner, soldier, father and all around protector/provider. One could make the case the greater rates of suicide, early heart attack, alcoholism and death among men indicate an even more stressful role for males than females. At the very least, Friedan would have done well to recognize that all of us have roles forced on us, not just women.
