Brees, Not Tomlinson, Deserves MVP

Submitted by Charlie, Jan 5, 2007 12:54

To further illustrate my case why Drew Brees is not worthy of the MVP let us take a look at how Drew Brees did against AFC Teams. First, because the Saints finished so poorly last year they were given an easy schedule and thus only had to play the AFC four times. Unluckily for them those four games were against the AFC North. How did the saints do? They went 1-3. How did Brees do? At first glance not bad as he went: 109-175 for 1,467 yards. Big time numbers. But here is the clincher. He threw 7 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. Of those 7 picks three of them were returned for back breaking touchdowns that cost the Saints a victory.

Anyone who followed Drew Brees closely in San Diego is keenly aware of how Drew Brees can make the killer mistake in the big game. This is why the Chargers grew tired of him and decided to give Rivers a shot, which in hindsight was a brilliant move. An MVP has to do more than just hurl for lots of yards. An MVP has to be reliable in the clutch. Drew Brees is not reliable in the clutch. Racking up stats against NFC nobodies in the regular season is hardly a qualification to win the MVP. Had Drew Brees played lights out against the AFC and won a few of those games he would be more deserving. But the facts stated above should by themselves rule out Brees for MVP consideration.
