Nice review/article for those discovering Guston for the first time. One comment: The sentence beginning "The fact remains...his earlier pure abstract pictures are much more inventive" would stand better if simply presented as opinion & not "fact", since this point is infinitely debatable. I happen to disagree, but remember the title of the book Dore Ashton wrote about Guston is appropriately titled "Yes, But".
