Freedom's Gift to Religion

"What radical Islamists, and those who rush to anticipate their grievances, do not understand is that this freedom has been democracy's great gift to religion." With all due respect, I believe Mr. Kirsch has it backward. Freedom of conscience is rather religion's gift to democracy, or at least Judaism's and Christianity's gift to democracy. Otherwise said, Jews and Christian's don't kill each other to settle doctrinal differences because we believe it's God's will that we not kill each other to settle doctrinal differences. Regrettably not all Muslims take the same view.
