Echoes of the Prague Spring

Especially sad is the fact that so many people are again ready to put their heads in the sand, invoking the doctrine of "moral equivalence." The analogies they give are inaccurate; a better one would be if the U.S. sent troops to Baja California to "protect" American residents from narcotrafficantes. The Russians are still imbued with a Cold War mentality of "capitalist encirclement" although today it is "NATO-imperialist." There are many analogies between 1968 and 2008, and if we don't learn from history, we are bound to repeat our earlier mistakes. In the last analysis, as long as the Russian siloviki are able to manipulate their own public opinion (they are trying very hard to do the same with Western media not under their control), they will be able to get away with these kinds of adventures.
