Five Things We Learned at the Movies

While I generally agree with most of your observations, I noticed some omissions. First, in tracing the history of the moody superhero film, I would credit Bryan Singer's X-Men films much more than I would Spiderman 2. Spiderman 2 was largely camp-driven, and if anything borrowed some of its darker bits from Singer's approach. More than any other superhero film before this summer, the X-men series used comics to highlight current politics, in that case discrimination. And how can you discuss successful female-themed summer blockbusters without mentioning Mamma Mia!? A nearly all-female cast led by Meryl Streep defied expectations and has grossed over $100 million.
