A Different Canon

Bravo, Mr. Kirsch! Why, oh, why is it that success breeds complacency, and even capitulation, as a large number of Great Britain's leaders urged upon Churchill? As a vociferous and large minority urged upon Lincoln, when the Union army seemed to be experiencing one defeat after another? As so many began urging upon President Bush, just when the Iraq War was becoming a true war? What in God's name is it with people who expect to gain and maintain freedom without cost? What is it? It is the same kind of thinking that leads to the empowerment of totalitarian dictatorships, which in turn foster the self-same mindset in those threatened by them. It takes prolonged oppression to wake people from the victim-mentality slumbers. Is it that, through which Americans must go?
