I love this book. He may have been "feeding the ego a gang leader" but the gang leader would have existed regardless. It is only thorough research like Venkatesh that we can truly learn the other side of the box. It is easy to criticize and act like Samaritans but it takes a good person with a deep personality to put himself in so much danger for the benefit of knowledge. Without people like him, we would be oblivious to the world around us and we would only be scraping only the surface of what really exists in a world of ours.
