The reference to Ayn Rand in this article is inappropriate. Rand's philosophy of rational egoism does not fit the standard "eat, or get eaten up" false-dichotomy accepted by almost everyone in today's society. Instead, she advocated a revolutionary new ethical system: that it is both moral and practical to act in one's own long-term self-interest, which certainly does not include things like murder or stealing. What this means in terms of how you actually live your life is that you must work to achieve (i.e. earn or produce) your values. And to the extent that you deal with other people to achieve your values, it is in your long-term best interest to do so through voluntary trade—not through coercion.
