I first saw GDS in a performance of Boheme w/ Tebaldi & Gobbi at the Lyric Opera in 1955. Was hooked from then on. Saw him almost every opera performance, sometimes twice! He was always compelling dramatically & brilliant vocally. Never a disappointing performance from GDS! The most stunning one, I think, was the one night he sang Enzo in Gioconda with Eileen Farrell! Divine! 1960, his last season with Lyric Opera, he appeared in both Fedora & Tosca. Later I saw him in Land of Smiles, sung in German. Oh, and I forgot to mention, his phrasing and diction were superb! Bravo Pippo, bravo!
