We attended the particularly damatic performance on Friday 14th March and I have to agree with your comment re the love potion lighting. I did smile and, later, remarked that a quick phrase from The Beatles 'Lucy in the Sky' may have been appropriate.

I wasn't sure if the military figures represented Tristan's present or his past life passing through his mind but didn't find them intrusive.

As visitors from the UK who consider ourselves to be mere opera amateurs, it was only our second time at The Met and we have been delighted by the friendly and knowledgeable people whom we meet there.
