You've suggested that victory margin is a better indicator than win-loss record of a team's true level of strength. I agree, but it seems that using some form of net points per possesion (instead of straight point differential) would be more fair to teams that like to slow it down, but are very succesfull. It just stands to reason that if one team runs a lot but is otherwise equal to a second team that slows it down, in likelihood of winning against a given opponent, then point differential will unfairly skew the differences in favor of the running team.
