Mercy For Spitzer

Rabbi Goldberg's editorial is a pleasant counterpoint to the gloating gluttony of Spitzer coverage in the NY Post. It would be well for all readers interested in this story to remember two things: first, Silva Wall Spitzer vocalized her belief, 16 years ago, that she would never find herself in the same position as Hillary Clinton. Her words were, "That will never be me." We'd all like to think that, but it could happen to anyone, including all those who now find pleasure in watching Spitzer's demise. Pride goeth before the fall, even for humble readers who think it could never happen to them; second, we are taught, "He [or she] who is without sin among you, let him [or her] cast the first stone." We were not taught, "He [or she] among you who has not sinned as spectacularly as Eliot Spitzer, let him [or her] cast the first stone." Mercy, while still fulfilling the demands of justice, is our opportunity to extend to others the grace and mercy we hope to receive ourselves.
