in response to reader comment: Spitzer Should Remain In Office Unless State Funds Were Used For Personal Conduct

Submitted by Exnavyguy, Mar 11, 2008 18:44

"If he didn't use public funds then leave him alone." Public officials are supposed to be the example of probity when it comes to following the law. The Mann Act of 1910 prohibits taking women across state lines for the immoral purposes. Whatever you may think of this law, it applies in the case of the governor. Just ask Chuck Berry about that particular statue.

Further, he sought to hide his payments with wire transfers to companies that existed merely as a conduit for funds to be sent to an ongoing criminal enterprise.

And even more, Mr. Spitzer is an attorney, an officer of the court. For him to knowingly violate these laws is such a violation of his professional oath that it simply cannot be ignored.

For those of you who think of this as similar to what WJ Clinton did with Monica, I say to you that the outrage over our former President's peccadillo was not so much his consorting with an intern as it was about his lying to a Grand Jury probe of his untruths in a sworn deposition.

Each violation of law by an officeholder is a slap in the face to all of us who strive, however unsuccessfully, to live our lives in a manner that keeps us in step with society and our religious beliefs. Mr. Spitzer should resign forthwith and spare us the agony of the ongoing media frenzy.
