'Do Not Mail' Proposal Hits Postal Resistance

Submitted by Thom Faris, Mar 7, 2008 11:39

Advertising mail does not cost the recipient a dime and it actually keeps the cost of first class mail down by creating volume that helps the Post Office deliver all classes of mail more efficiently. Eliminate advertising mail and you will either see first class mail delivery times lengthen drastically or the cost of a first class stamp rise quickly to unprecedented levels, probably both. The general public does not understand and are constantly bombarded with negative comments about advertising mail by the industry's competitors. Newspapers, Radio and TV all contribute to the negativity attached to advertising mail. Why, easy answer, because they compete with it. It's the oldest game in the book. Run down your competition and try to gain ground on them by doing so. Of course In this civilized, politically correct world, that practice has become somewhat taboo. Oh, but not when it comes to running down advertising mail by the other advertising medias. They consistently run negative ads against the mailing industry and call it news. How far do you think a bill would get for a "do not run commercials on television" or "do not run advertisements in the newspapers." We all know It would get no where, and yet TV commercials to me, and most people I know, are far more bothersome than the advertising mail I get that I may not be interested in. It doesn't take me 5 minutes every 15 minutes to get rid of the mail I don't want, but I do have to suffer through 4 or 5 minutes of TV ads every 15 minutes of a program I want to watch, so I say let's get rid of all advertising, I don't want to see any advertising in my newspaper, of course that would make it much more earth friendly, instead of being 3 inches thick it would be about 3 sheets thick if all it had was news, and just think how much more efficient watching TV would be, especially sports where it would not be necessary to cut away for commercial break right when the big play was happening. Yes, if the geniuses in Washington want to make a do not mail list for their buddies at the newspapers and television networks, then let's not stop there, I don't want one smidgeon of advertising coming my way, take it off TV, Radio and the newspapers, it's only fair isn't it?
