Pope Readies a Challenge to Catholic Educators

This is an excellent article, and I commend the author for getting material from both sides with regards to Fr. Henry and Dr. Maguire. Sadly though, I am not suprised at it. I myself was a doctoral student at Marquette and as I became more interested in ethics I became more appalled at my surroundings, much of which stems from Dr. Maguire's teachings and his influence at a unversity he's been at for such a long time. More than my disagreement with his teachings (this is part of academia), was my disagreement with his close-mindedness towards the other side's position. This article shows this exactly, with his comments about "Bob Jones University." I can speak from intimate experience that while most students and facultty at Franciscan University do fall it what would be labeled "conservative" (orthodox is much better) they are quite an academically free school with many students getting a shock the moment they sit in their first classes at the academic demand, and expectations of free inquiry. One just needs to take a look at their school paper and read the opinions of columnists, students, and professors concerning the election to realize that authentic Catholic teaching - teaching rooted in the Truth in search for the Truth is real there, and it's a shame professors from the generation immediately following Vatican 2 refuse to acknowledge this possibility. Again- an excellent article!
