CUNY Students' Trip to Cuba 'Propaganda'

Submitted by AKL, Mar 4, 2008 18:35

I'm not sure that Fidel (or Raul, who is now in charge) needs the propaganda value a CUNY trip may or may not bestow.... If Cuba has made propaganda inroads of any note in recent years, it would be for having sent thousands of Cuban doctors into the furthest reaches of poor Latin American and other nations--including to Pakistan, after the major earthquake there. Restricting US travel to Cuba for five decades merely tarnishes the U.S. reputation for violating its own citizens' rights to freedom of travel (something one might sooner expect of an authoritarian government) and for maintaining incredibly inconsistent standards of our friends and enemies around the world. If the United States truly wants to stand on principle, we must restrict travel and trade with other non-democratic states, such as Egypt and Saudia Arabia. The US used to refuse any dialogue with Kim Jong Il's North Korea, until the dictator demonstrated that the nation had developed nuclear weapons. Now normalization is back on the table. Is this the sort of message we want to send to potential "rogue" nations?
