Although I enjoyed Mr. Buckley, I never knew that he had words with Mr. Vidal. I never found him vicious or disrespectful to guest. So, I can only assume Mr. Vidal asked for it.

I suspect conservative influence will grow when conservative policies are proven effective, as they have in Chile. Conservative beliefs are being accepted because common people of modest means are learning to trust their own judgment, hard work and initiative. They need spokespersons who reflect their interests and respect their situations.

However, I must add that libel suits have not impoverished Ann Coulter only because she has no credibility. Bill Cunningham is a smartalek, and John McCain did well by boxing his ears. The people who take Mr. Buckley's standard will avoid their excesses.
