Do we really need a scientific study to know that what common sense tells us is true?

I don't know if Dr. McWhorter has had occasion to tutor students, but I have had considerable experience with that. I don't think that there is any question that, provided the tutor goes about it right, individual tutoring can do a great amount of good. Sometimes at a school I will tutor a small group of students. Common sense tells us that a teacher with a small class can spend more individual time with students. Just as what we badly need in our schools more individual or small group tutoring, so too we need teachers to be able to provide more individual attention to their students.
