Mr. Dirscoll has made a valid point that has not been heard in the debates. Having lived in many undeveloped countries, I have met peoples of many countries who desperately wish to emigrate to the US, but who do not have an opportunity given the current laws, and who do not have the geographical advantage that Mexicans and Central Americans have in crossing over the border illegally, nor the network and advocacy groups that support them once they arrive here. Many of the people I have met in Africa, Asia and the Middle East are more "deserving" of emigration to the US based on their personal merits than many of those I know who are here already illegally. Should these people be denied a chance at US citizenship simply because they did not break US immigration laws and enter the country illegally, even though they are just as deserving of an opportunitty to better the lives of their families as those here illegally? Granting those who are in the country illegally a path to citizenship simply because they are here already by virture of breaking the law, and denying others who have the same needs, but didn't ,or wouldn't, break the laws is grossly unfair and unAmerican. Further, it sends a negative message to people around the world that your odds of securing US citizenship are much better if you break our laws than if you obey them. Why haven't we heard of giving ALL peoples in the world who wish to emigrate to the US a fair chance to compete for the comparatively few spaces in the country open to them? There needs to be compassion for these billions of people too.
